Continental Coal Limited (ASX: CCC) is an established South African thermal coal producer and exporter. Continental was formed to take advantage of the robust domestic and global demand for coal, with particular focus on Southern Africa. Continental has a portfolio of producing and advanced coal projects located in South Africa's major coal fields and is focused on exploration throughout Southern Africa’s emerging coal fields.

Following the commencement of production at the Vlakvarkfontein coal mine in May 2010, and its acquisition of Mashala Resources in October 2010, Continental is targeting production from its portfolio of predominantly export thermal coal mines of 7Mtpa by 2012. In 2011 Continental Coal has committed to the development of the US$40m Penumbra underground coal mine. Penumbra is expected to produce 750,000t of ROM coal production annually over an initial 13 year mine life, with first production scheduled for Q4, 2011.

In addition Continental has commenced a Bankable Feasibility Study on its De Wittekrans coal project, where a development decision of the 3.6Mtpa prospect is forecast to be made in the second half of 2011. The development of these three mines, it’s strategic off take and financing agreement with EDF Trading and joint ventures with KORES for its Vlakplaats coal project is in line with the Company's strategy of rapidly bringing robust, low cost projects into production with multi-national institutions to take advantage of strong domestic and export coal prices associated with sustained global thermal coal demand and to create value to Continental Coal and its shareholders.
